Pure water is separated from contaminants

In reverse osmosis, pressurised water is forced through a synthetic semi-permeable membrane. The quality of the membranes, which act like an extremely fine sieve, is of particular importance. The pores have an extremely small diameter (approx. 0.0001 micrometres). This ensures that most foreign substances in the water, which are much larger, cannot pass through the membrane pores. It allows water molecules to pass through and retains all impurities by 99 percent. While pure water (permeate) collects on one side of the membrane, the water with contaminants (concentrate) is discharged via the drain on the other side.

Constant flushing of the filter membrane promotes the longevity of the system

Since contaminants constantly accumulate in front of the membrane and can hinder the osmosis process, raw water is continuously passed over the surface of the membrane. This ensures that impurities are flushed away and directed into the drain. Magnetisation constantly forms a layer of pure water that supports this important removal process. As a result, the rejected molecules do not even come into contact with the membrane surface. This washing procedure prevents the pores of the membrane from clogging or rejected contaminants from settling on it. In this way, the membranes maintain a constant, consistent performance over many years. The pre-filters usually only need to be replaced after several months. Good reverse osmosis water filter systems have a very high cost-benefit ratio, require little maintenance, and deliver the best results for producing pure water free from all impurities.

University professor Ingo Froböse, expert in prevention and rehabilitation in sport at the German Sport University Cologne and head of the "Centre for Health through Sport and Movement", said on the topic of drinking water: "I personally also drink tap water, but first treat it again with so-called reverse osmosis. Osmosis water = distilled water?

A clear no! In distillation, water is brought to a boil and the condensate (the steam) is used. However, distilled water still contains slight impurities because some contaminants have a lower boiling point than water. These substances are also present in the condensate and thus in the distilled water. In reverse osmosis, on the other hand, water is pressed under pressure through a multilayer fine-pored membrane whose pores are so small that only water molecules can pass through. Contaminants are filtered out by 99 percent. Osmosis water is therefore not distilled water, although both types of water have a very high degree of purity and are considered "light" or "soft".

What should be considered when buying a reverse osmosis system? These five points:

• A constant flushing of the filter membrane is recommended
• a self-cleaning function during longer absences
• The systems should have certificates for germ-free operation, protection against viruses and bacteria, as well as reports on the filtration of radioactive particles
• The manufacturer should have many years of experience in the water filter systems market
• The manufacturer should provide at least a 30-year warranty on their systems (and much more)
